More than 180,000 square feet of studio space, including several sound stages, will come up on the site of what used to be Irish Glass Bottle at Dublin’s Ringsend suburb. Morris and Moloney commissioned several feasibility studies over the last five years and the results have all been positive. Hollywood studios have expressed interest in the new space and U2 singer Bono has thrown his weight behind the project, lobbying to make it happen, but with no financial interest. The studio will directly generate nearly 3000 new jobs and will be a huge boost for Ireland’s creative industries economy.
“Ireland is now a very attractive location to produce television series and movies. Ireland needs the infrastructure to capitalise on the growth of the film and digital industries and the growing international success of Irish film making talent,” Morris and Moloney said in a statement.
The project also has the backing of the Irish Film Board (IFB). Chief Executive James Hickey said, “This is very good news for the Irish film and television industry. There is an urgent need for increased studio infrastructure in Ireland to increase production activity, which will create further employment opportunities in the audio-visual industry, building on the success of the industry to date. We have been working for some time with this project and look forward to further plans for the studio being announced.”
Current Irish film studios include Ashford Studios where the television series Vikings is currently filming and Ardmore Studios where the television series Penny Dreadful has been filming for a few years.
