It had already been made public that the 50th Directors’ Fortnight (set to unspool from 9-19 May 2018 as part of the 71st Cannes Film Festival) would be Edouard Waintrop’s last, after occupying the position of General Delegate since the 2012 edition. We now know the name of his successor, who has been chosen by the board of directors of the SRF (Film Directors’ Society) and who will take over the reins in November 2018: Italy’s Paolo Moretti.
Born in Italy in 1975, Moretti has worked for many European film festivals and institutions, including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Filmoteca Española in Madrid, the Leeds International Film Festival (UK), the Portuguese Film Library in Lisbon, One World in Prague and Cinéma du Réel. From 2008-2011, he served as deputy director and programming advisor of the Venice Film Festival, in particular for the Orizzonti section. In 2012 and 2013 he was a programming advisor for the Rome Film Fest (the CinemaXXI section), and he has been a member of the Selection Committee of the FIDMarseille and a programmer for Visions du Réel (Nyon) since 2012. Since 2014, he has been General Delegate of the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival and the manager of the Le Concorde arthouse cinema.
