What happens when two mediocre, clumsy European detectives pair up to investigate a murder case? This bizarre question was the trigger for The Case, an eight-episode Swedish tragicomic TV series directed by Jon Holmberg (Swedish Dicks, Café Bärs) and Simen Alsvik (Lilyhammer, Anchors Up [+leggi anche:

The Case tells the story of two incompetent detectives, Sophie Borg from Stockholm (Lisa Henni) and Tom Brown from St Ives, UK (Adam Godley). Given their poor professional track records, they are both given one last chance to solve the gruesome murder of a British man in Norrbacka, Sophie’s hometown. The investigation is to be supervised by local police chief Klas Wall (Tomas von Brömssen), who is about to retire and is overexcited about the case. The team also includes Bill Wall (Christoffer Nordenrot), a zany fellow detective, and Sonja Mustanaamio (Stina Rautelin), an overly critical forensic scientist from Finland.
The series, which was premiered in April 2017 by the Swedish TV channel SVT1 before being sold to the Los Gatos-based platform, has a strong satirical tone, and playfully lampoons the Nordic noir detective genre and the Swedish welfare model. Penned by a team of three Swedish screenwriters (Erik Hultkvist, Tapio Leopold and Stefan Thunberg) and based on an idea by Rikard Ulvshammar, The Case is a co-production by the national public broadcaster SVT – Sveriges Television, Felix Herngren's FLX, Film i Väst and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, with the support of the Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
The Case proved very successful both in Sweden and abroad last year. It was named Best Comedy Drama at C21's International Drama Awards in London and earned two nominations at the 2017 Seoul International Drama Awards (Best Director for Simen Alsvik and Best Comedy). Finally, American cable network Showtime is currently working on a remake of the TV series, penned by Etan Frankel, a playwright and screenwriter who is best known for the comedy-drama Shameless.
