This is Latvia's 11th Foreign-language Oscar submission, and it is the first time a documentary has been selected as the Latvian representative.

Ivars Seleckis (1936), an iconic figure in Latvian cinema, was one of the faces of the Baltic school of poetic documentary. His Crossroad Street (Šķērsiela) won the European Documentary of the Year Award at the European Film Awards in 1990.
