by Argentina’s Santiago Loza is continuing its successful festival run, and it is also included in one of the Cannes side sections: the 27th ACID (Association for Independent Film Distribution). The film will be screened as part of the ACID TRIP #3 selection, a carte blanche dedicated to independent Argentinian cinema that is organised in partnership with the PCI (Association of Argentinian Film Directors – read about the full ACID line-up here). Earlier this month, the film received a Special Mention in the Argentinian Feature Film Competition of the 21st BAFICI as well as the Best Feature Award from the Association of Argentinian Film Critics. Also, Portico Media acquired the non-exclusive VoD rights for the film for Southeast Asia, South Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Meanwhile, at the Cannes Marché du Film, The Open Reel will be touting all of its successful, already available titles, along with its latest acquisition, Arima by Jaione Camborda. The debut feature by the Galician director tells the story of four women and a girl whose lives are interrupted after two strangers turn up abruptly. One of them is trying to flee from the other and, like some ghostly presence with an uncertain existence, sneaks around the town. The other stranger is an injured man who carries a gun and will interfere with the women’s lives. This mystery treads the fine line between dreams and nightmares, reality and imagination, and fear and desire. In the lead roles are Melania CruzNagore AriasRosa Puga Dávila and Tito Asorey.

Born in San Sebastián, Camborda is known for her short experimental films, such as Wild Mane CropAgility and Nimbos, and her work as a screenwriter and art director. For Arima, she once again worked with celluloid to enhance the lyrical aspect of the film grain, with cinematographer Alberte Branco in charge of lensing it. Arima, which was awarded last year at Push Play, the work-in-progress platform organised by the FICX Industry Days at the Gijón International Film Festival (see the news), was written and produced by Camborda for her own company, Esnatu Zinema, and has received support from AGADIC and TVG.
