The Thessaloniki Film Festival’s Agora is poised to “Go to Cannes” for the third year in a row. Five Greek films that are currently in post-production will be screened as works in progress at the event, which will be held on Monday 20 May at 2 pm in Palais K, during the Marché du Film of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival (14-25 May 2019). The initiative is supported by the Greek Film Centre, in partnership with Cannes’ Marché du Film, and it should be noted that Greece remains the only country from South-Eastern Europe and the Balkans that is taking part in the event. Two first-time directors have been selected with their projects: Christos Nikou with his allegorical comedy Apples (see the news), and Costas Athousakis with a romantic “cine-operetta” entitled Persephone. After his debut comedy, The GuideZacharias Mavroeidis is presenting his sophomore dramedy, Defunct, about a thirty-something failed businessman who moves into the house of his grandfather, a deceased World War II veteran.

Eight years after his debut, JerksStelios Kammitsis will be coming along with his sophomore project, a road movie about a young former diving champion who sets off on a spontaneous trip to Italy, during which he meets a German drifter. They both head to Bavaria for their own, different reasons. Finally, in his fifth feature film, Winona, Alexandros Voulgaris, aka The Boy (Thread), follows four young women as they enjoy the sun and the sea on a beautiful beach. Although none of them is Winona, more secrets will come to light as they carry on playing games and telling stories.

The 60th-anniversary edition of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival will run from 31 October–10 November.
