The National Feature Film Competition jury, headed up by director Zeki Demirkubuz, and comprising Emre Erkmen, Latife Tekin, Mert Fırat and Şebnem Bozoklu, handed the Best Film Award to Ali Özel, who also received the Best Director Award. Demirkubuz mentioned that the decision had been unanimous, stating, “There was one film we applauded, one film that truly stood out. At a time when the state and government alike are trying to restrain and tone down cinema, when certain groups claiming to be oppositional voices are trying to make cinema the object of cheap criticism and everyday politics – in short, when cinema is prey to multiple competing agendas – we watched a film that reminds us of the nature of life, the past, what we have left behind, death and cemeteries, a film that restores us at least in part, that gives a sense of the zeitgeist, that goes in search of the truth.”

Özel, who was also awarded Best Screenplay for Steppe, uses the film to tell the story of a village elder who refuses to abandon his home, which is about to be flooded owing to the construction of a dam. His son returns, and tries to convince him to change his mind and carry away the coffin of his late wife, which is buried in the garden. The movie’s leading thesp, Mücahit Koçak, received the Best Actor Award, while the Best Supporting Actor Award was shared by Ozan Dağara and Hakan Emre Ünal. Furthermore, Steppe received the Behlül Dal Best First Film, Best Cinematography, Best Music, Best Film Editing and Film-Yön (Turkish Film Directors’ Guild) Best Director gongs.

The other winners of the night were Love, Spells and All That by Ümit Ünal and La Belle Indifference by Kıvanç Sezer, which shared the Dr Avni Tolunay Special Jury Prize. Love, Spells and All That also received the Best Female Actor Award for Selen Uçer as well as the Turkish Film Critics’ Association (SİYAD) Award. La Belle Indifference’s lead, Alican Yücesoy, was the recipient of Best Actor, while the film’s editor, Selda Taşkın, who also edited Chronology, was the winner of the inaugural Cahide Sonku Award, which is intended to draw attention to the representation and visibility of women in the Turkish film industry. Finally, Best Supporting Female Actor went to Aslı İnandık for her role in Breath, and Best Art Direction went to Meral Efe Yurtseven and Yunus Emre Yurtseven for their work on Chronology.

In the National Documentary Film Competition, the winning movie was Şirin Bahar Demirel’s Women’s Country, for “making use of creative film language to portray universal themes such as home, yearning and belonging through a set of heartfelt personal stories”.
