DOK Leipzig's industry section is large and varied, and consists of several events and almost 50 projects showcased across four sections. In this report, we highlight the most important events and describe the award-winning projects.

DOK Co-Pro Market

The industry section's flagship event, the DOK Co-Pro Market, took place for the 15th time during the festival, which unspooled from 28 October-3 November. The DOK Co-Pro Market featured 35 projects produced or co-produced by 40 countries (for the full list, please click here). The teams behind the projects had the opportunity to meet and consult with more than 60 representatives of production companies, funds, international sales agents, festivals and other professionals.

The biggest winner was South African director Godisamang Khunou, who received the Development Prize for the Best Female Director from the Saxon State Minister for the Arts, worth €5,000, as well as the Zonta Club Leipzig-Elster Talent Development Prize of up to €1,000 to cover the travel and accommodation of one participating female producer, for the project Black Women and Sex.

The project explores the tension between black women and the politics of sex. Through the voices of three females from different parts of Africa (Nigeria, Zambia and South Africa) with different sexual identities, the film exposes us to issues that we seldom talk about and shows how the politics of sex connect in different contexts.

Black Women and Sex is in production, courtesy of South African company Mogale Pictures, and is expected to be premiered by June 2020.

The project Irena by Lithuanian filmmaker Giedrė Žickytė received the Current Time TV Award, worth US $2,000. The logline describes the project as "an intimate portrait of Irena Veisaitė by an intimate friend. A woman who is an iconic example of open-mindedness and forgiveness, whose standards of true humanism came out of her experience in the Holocaust. A role model for our troubled times."

Co-produced by Žickytė for Lithuanian company Moonmakers and by Tina Leeb for Germany's Saxonia Entertainment, Irena is expected to be completed by February 2022.

European Women’s Audiovisual Network

The European Women’s Audiovisual Network (EWA) handed out the EWA Development Prize for the best project by filmmakers in the Circle Women DOK Accelerator for the fourth year in a row.

(woriking title: Between Two Wars). The project is being co-produced by Maksym Nakonechnyi for Tabor (Ukraine), Ilona Bicevska for Avantis Promo (Latvia) and Patrick Hamm for Bulldog Agenda (Germany).

The jury also gave out a mentorship to another outstanding project, 72 hours by Belarusian director Anna Savchenko, who will be mentored by Alessia Sonaglioni. The project is being co-produced by Iva Tkalec and Isabel de la Serna for Playtime Films (Belgium), Volia Chajkouskaya for Volia Films (Belarus/Estonia) and Jean-Marie Gigon for SaNoSi Productions (France). One of the producers of the project will receive mentorship support from DOK Industry head Brigid O'Shea.

DOK Preview Germany

In co-operation with German Films, seven new German creative documentaries were presented at DOK Preview Germany. Pursuant to the newly launched partnership with post-production company D-Facto Motion, the DFM Work-in-Progress Prize, endowed with €10,000, was awarded to Who Owns My Village by director Christoph Eder and producers Marcel Lenz and Guido Schwab, of ostlicht filmproduktion. In what is billed as "a film about the essence of democracy between white seaside architecture and the poetic rustling of the waves", the filmmaker returns to the village where he was born, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, to watch the inhabitants awaken from their political lethargy and battle for the fate of the popular tourist destination. The project is currently in post-production.
