After six days and 17,500 admissions, and after welcoming more than 650 industry guests, Switzerland’s Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur came to a close last Sunday. The short film festival conferred awards amongst the international and Swiss competition as well as – for the first time – selecting a short film candidate for potential nomination at the 2020 European Film Awards.

The festival’s International Grand Prix, with a prize of 12,000 CHF, went to Randa Maroufi’s Bab Sebta. The French-Moroccan documentary explores Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on Moroccan soil. Here the everyday lives of those who inhabit this area act within a theatrical microcosm of the world which explores modern pre-occupations with identity, immigration and ideology.

The jury said that the film was “…an astonishing tour de force that is a much-needed political statement [and a] film that questions the ideology of borders and toxic immigration rhetoric through complex and exceptionally choreographed tracking shots.”

The festival’s promotional award, conferred upon a film in the International Competition with a prize of 10,000 CHF, went to French film Autumn III (Automne malade), directed by Lola Cambourieu and Yann Berlier. The fiction film is a delicate exploration of a teenager who goes to the country to escape from the pressures of her mother’s illness. The jury said of the film: “The journey to self-discovery and acceptance becomes a cinematic adventure that captures accents of truth and glimpses of beauty in an almost mesmerising way. A film that looks forward while reinventing the lessons of Eric Rohmer and Maurice Pialat.”

This year’s Short Film Candidate for the European Film Awards, being awarded at Winterthur for the first time, went to Lithuanian film Community Gardens (Kolektyviniai sodai) directed by Vytautas Katkus. The film offers a detailed and humorous look at a community that keeps on living and struggling on a daily basis while never forgetting to enjoy life.

The International Jury consisted of Annina Wettstein (festival programmer, Switzerland/Germany), Chipo Zhou (artistic director Durban International Film Festival, South Africa), Giona A Nazzaro (General Delegate Venice International Film Critics’ Week/Curator Visions du Réel (Nyon), Ognjen Glavonić (filmmaker/co-founder Panevo Film Festival, Serbia) and Zsuzsanna Kiràly (head of development Komplizen Film, Germany

The Award for the Best Swiss Film, with a cash prize of 10,000 CHF, went to 22:47 Line 34 directed by Michael Karrer. The jury said that the film, exploring a moment of tension on a municipal bus line late in the evening, “… shows a very life-like and universally relatable situation with a wealth of sharply observed details that are directly relevant and topical for our society.”

The Award for Best Swiss School Film was given to bloc b by Nora Longatti. Emanating from ECAL (École cantonale d'art de Lausanne) which the jury praised for “…displaying a boldly original directing approach, powerfully kinetic visuals, and mastery of cinematic language.”

The Swiss film awards were judged by Anne Gaschütz (deputy director Filmfest Dresden, Germany), Camille Hébert-Bénazet (head of Cannes Court Métrage, France) and Vladan Petkovic (Film critic/curator, Serbia)

The Audience Award went to the Greek drama Postcards from the End of The World directed by Konstantinos Antonopoulos. The film, which wins 10,000 CHF, is an intriguing mix of social realism and apocalyptic vision of the near future.

The 24th edition of Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur takes place from 3 to 8 November 2020.
