This year’s 70th-anniversary edition of the Berlinale (20 February-1 March) will see Jeremy Irons, born in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1948, step in to head up the International Jury – picking up the baton (or perhaps Bear?) from last year’s choice, actress Juliette Binoche. “With his distinctive style, Jeremy Irons has embodied some iconic characters that have accompanied me throughout my journey in cinema, making me aware of the complexity of human beings,” observed debuting Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian. “His talent and the choices he has made, both as an artist and as a citizen, make me feel proud to welcome him as president of the jury for the 70th edition of the Berlinale.”

during the 2011 and 2013 editions, respectively. “It is with feelings of great pleasure and not inconsiderable honour that I take on the role of president of the International Jury for the Berlinale 2020, a festival that I have admired for so long and that I have always enjoyed attending,” observed the renowned actor, known for his roles in Barbet Schroeder’s Reversal of Fortune, which earned him numerous awards, 1986’s The Mission and Dead Ringers, but also his work in TV, including the Neil Jordan-created series The Borgias and, most recently, HBO’s hit Watchmen. “Being in Berlin for the festival will be a treat, giving me the opportunity not only to remind myself of that great city, but also to watch this year’s crop of films chosen by the festival, followed by the opportunity to discuss their merits with my fellow jury members.”

This year’s edition of the gathering will be the first since the departure of Dieter Kosslick, and the Berlinale is now led by Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek as Executive Director.
