It seems as though it’s not only the coronavirus that’s spreading these days, but also e-mails from film festivals announcing cancellations or postponements. After the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, SXSW, Bifest and a clutch of other gatherings, the organisers of the Visegrad Film Forum, mere days before the start of its ninth edition, have released a statement saying, “Based on the current situation in Europe and Bratislava, aka the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we’ve decided to cancel the current edition of our event, which was to be held from 10-14 March. We will let you know whether we will cancel VFF completely or just put it off to a later date.” They added that, as of 9 March, there were only five diagnosed cases of the coronavirus in Slovakia, but the reason for the event’s cancellation is to “avoid the spread of infection”.

The highlights of this year’s edition were set to be master classes by director Costa-Gavras, sound editor Eddy Joseph, producer Jim Stark, editor Molly Malene Stensgaard and cinematographer Paweł Edelman (see the news).

The organiser of the ninth Visegrad Film Forum is Boiler NGO. The list of co-organisers includes the Film and TV Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts Bratislava. Financial support was provided by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the International Visegrad Fund and Nadácia SPP.
