The Evolution! Mallorca Film Festival, founded and headed up by Sandra Lipski, has now reached its ninth edition without sacrificing any of its spirit, and despite the particularly trying circumstances of 2020, it still exudes the same hopeful anticipation as it did in previous years. Between 23 and 29 October, screenings, meetings, master classes and a host of other activities will unspool on the Balearic island, with the ultimate aim being to strengthen ties and strike up collaborations between film teams from all over the world.

scheda film] (UK/USA/Hungary/China/France) by Marjane Satrapi (who will receive the Evolution Vision Award), in which Rosamund Pike steps into the shoes of French scientist Marie Curie, and will be brought to a close by Gregory Kirchhoff’s comedy Baumbacher Syndrome. In between, audiences will get to see around 100 titles across its various sections.

For the first time, the festival will be offering part of its programme on the digital Filmin platform. “Like many other international film festivals this year, we have decided to shift part of our programme online, to ensure that our audience can still enjoy the festival, even in these times of travel restrictions. Therefore, we hope to welcome viewers both virtually and physically to this year’s edition," stated Lipski as she introduced the line-up.

Standing out among the titles that will get an airing at the gathering are Sekuritas (Switzerland) by Carmen Stadler; Forgotten We’ll Be (Colombia) by Spaniard Fernando Trueba, starring Javier Cámara in the lead role; Zoros Solo [+leggi anche:

scheda film] by Martin Busker (Germany); It's Gonna Be Fine by Christian Werner (Germany); The Waiter [+leggi anche:

scheda film] by Steve Krikris (Greece); and the documentaries Mujereando by Carmen Tamayo (Spain) and That Click by Luca Severi (USA).

Besides this, Balearic productions will also be showcased at Evolution! 2020: in the Made in Baleares section, 14 short films will be in competition, with titles such as Control by Ann Perelló, Dona by Marga Meliá and Hydra by Jessie Folley. There will also be round-tables on hot topics such as the future of distribution, new strategies for approaching international co-production, and the inner workings of festivals, among other subjects. The great Ángela Molina will receive the 2020 Evolution Honorary Award for her dazzling acting career and her turns in works by auteurs of the calibre of Luis Buñuel, Bigas Luna, Jaime Chávarri, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón and Pedro Almodóvar, among countless others.

The director of the event sums up: “I’m excited to present the ninth edition of EMIFF. Our international audience and filmmakers from all over the world will get to experience stories of resistance, bravery, struggle, sacrifice and, most importantly of all, unfaltering love, on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Our intention with this line-up is to unite, inspire and put a stop to intolerance while we press on with our mission to build bridges between people and cultures.”
