Yesterday, International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) (1-7 February) announced the award winners for its 50^th edition. In detail, this year saw the triumph of Vinothraj PS's Pebbles, the recipient of the prestigious Tiger Award. The jury, composed of Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese, Orwa Nyrabia, Hala Elkoussy, Helena van der Meulen and Ilse Hughan, provided the following supporting statement: “In the midst of many admirable and ambitious works, the jury was blown away by a seemingly simple and humble film we fell in love with instantly. Creating maximum impact with a minimum of means, the filmmaker reaches his goal with the same conviction and determination as his main characters. The result is a lesson in pure cinema, captivating us with its beauty and humour, in spite of its grim subject.”

scheda film] both won Special Jury Awards. Next, the VPRO Big Screen Award went to Ana Katz's El perro que no calla, and Jasmila Žbanić's acclaimed war drama Quo Vadis, Aida? [+leggi anche:

scheda film] received the BankGiro Loterij Audience Award. Furthermore, the Ammodo Tiger Short Awards were given to Sunsets, everyday by Basir Mahmood, Terranova by Alejandro Pérez Serrano and Alejandro Alonso Estrella, and Maat Means Land by Native American artist and filmmaker Fox Maxy. In addition, the festival nominated Eva Giolo's Flowers blooming in our throats for the short-film category of the European Film Awards. Finally, the FIPRESCI Prize was bestowed upon Taiki Sakpisit's The Edge of Daybreak, whilst Ane Hjort Guttu won the KNF Prize for her short film Manifesto, and Philippe Lacôte scooped the Youth Jury Award for Night of the Kings [+leggi anche:

Talking about the unusual nature of this year's expanded edition, IFFR director Vanja Kaludjercic commented: “In these most challenging of times, we are incredibly proud to have brought an outstanding selection of titles to our reimagined festival format. The expanded Tiger Competition included 16 films that reflect the plurality of voices and visions of talent that will continue to deliver great cinema for years to come. What we learned from this experience is that as resilient as the industry is, so are our audiences, who fully embraced and celebrated the first chapter of this year’s festival [with the second to come from 2-6 June 2021].”
