Preparations for the postponed 55th edition of the largest film gathering in the Czech Republic (see the news), the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, are in full swing, as the festival’s president, Jiří Bartoška, confirmed at a recent press conference. The date for the gathering has been pushed back to 20-28 August to ensure a safe and secure in-person event. Moreover, the president noted that thanks to the involvement of a new strategic investor, Rockaway Capital, the festival “has the opportunity to expand its existing activities, such as KVIFF Distribution, and to realise new projects that we have been considering for a long time”.

One of the new such initiatives is the development of the festival’s very own KVIFF.TV platform, which will be offering exclusive informational and journalistic content. The platform will be inaugurated on 2 June, when it will host the 16th edition of the Pragueshorts Film Festival (2-27 June), followed by KVIFF Live, daily reports (which had circulated in printed form at previous editions) from the festival during its run.

“We believe that KVIFF.TV should be one of the crucial new things to arise as a result of what we have learned over the last year-and-a-half. It does not mean we will be leaving the traditional theatres, but we see the opportunities that the virtual environment offers. The platform should have significant use for industry professionals, firstly in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and then in the entirety of Central and Eastern Europe,” revealed festival executive director Kryštof Mucha. The event disclosed that the ambition in the future is to employ the platform for a year-round arts programme.

The programming team is currently working on the festival selection, artistic director Karel Och said. He added that it is a complex activity, since they decided to grant films from early 2020, whose premieres had been thwarted by the outbreak of the pandemic, the opportunity to be considered for the festival line-up as well. Furthermore, the organisers said they plan to “increase existing distribution activities through KVIFF Distribution, and to develop projects and programmes with the aim of offering young and talented filmmakers support for their cinematic growth”. The festival intends to intensify its presence in the Karlovy Vary region by organising other social and cultural events throughout the year.

The 55th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will run from 20-28 August, with the following edition scheduled in the traditional slot of 1-9 July 2022.
