A new Danish series is now in the making, entitled Phantom Feelings and created by Rikke Kolding and Anna Juul. Currently being shot in Copenhagen, this production is directed by Kolding and is also penned by the creative duo, with Juul serving as head writer and Kolding as co-writer.

In brief, Phantom Feelings is a tragicomic story which centres on 28-year-old Allie and her journey to heal her broken heart. When Allie’s boyfriend Thomas decides to break up with her, Allie has a hard time recovering from her broken heart and settling into life as a single woman. After spontaneous sex with charismatic artist Chresten, the latter suggests she join a new heartache therapy group. Here, Allie finds a community for broken hearts.

The series’ key cast members are Anna Bruus, Ann Eleonora Jørgensen, Peter Plaugborg, Besir Zeciri, Danni Toma, Sara Fanta, Sandra Guldberg Kampp, Ernesto Piga Carbone, Thomas Hwan, Kirsten Lehfeldt, Anna Juul and Søren Malling. The technical crew includes DoP Eddie Klint, editor Karolina Bengtsson, production designer Signe Krab Nymann, costume designer Rebecca Sophia Morris, composer Jenny Rossander (best known by her stage name Lydmor) and sound designer Peter Storm Wich.

As explained by the creative duo as they discussed their expectations for this project with Cineuropa: “We hope to show the audience that they are not alone, and that Phantom Feelings will unite us and encourage us to share our experiences of broken hearts.” Kolding added: “In fiction, a broken heart is often a quick turning point that leads the protagonist from one state to another, but in real life heartaches take up a lot of time. Most people experience heartaches throughout their lives and, in that sense, it’s a sort of collective sorrow that everybody can relate to.” Lastly, Xee’s executive producer Linda Etgar commented: “Community plays a large role in Phantom Feelings and we hope that lots of Danes, whatever their age or sex, will be able to see themselves in our protagonist Allie and in the people who surround her who have also had their hearts broken.”

Phantom Feelings is produced by Søs Thøstesen for Denmark’s BLU, with Linda Etgar serving as executive producer for Xee, and with backing from the Danish Film Institute. Fremantle is in charge of sales and distribution. The series will premiere on Xee this autumn.
