The 20th annual Tribeca Film Festival has announced the winners in the competition categories at this year’s awards ceremony, which took place at Spring Studios in New York City. It was a return to a physical event after last year’s awards were delivered online. The hybrid edition of the festival, where there were screenings in New York at outdoor venues for the public as well as online screenings for the industry, ended with three prizes going to Levan Koguashvili’s Brighton 4th [+leggi anche:

The touching film about the immigrant experience, represented internationally by Loco Films, about a former wrestler, played by Levan Tediashvili, who travels to New York’s Brighton Beach area to help his troubled son, won Best International Feature Film, while its star, Tediashvili, pocketed Best Actor in an International Narrative Feature Film. Screenwriter Boris Frumin, who also penned Koguashvili’s two previous narrative films, won Best Screenplay. The jury members were Lesli Klainberg, Melissa Leo, Delroy Lindo, Alexander Payne and Peter Scarlet.

The jury members were clearly enamoured by European films that showed off big cities from different perspectives. Best Cinematography in an International Narrative Feature Film was won by Elisabeth Vogler, who directed Roaring 20’s [+leggi anche:

. The movie takes the form of a single sequence shot, which roams the summertime streets of Paris.

The Best Actress gong in this category was shared by Bassant Ahmed and Basmala Elghaiesh, who star in Souad [+leggi anche:

, playing two teenage sisters in one of Egypt's Nile Delta cities, one of whom leads a secret life in the virtual world. Directed by Ayten Amin, the film is an Egyptian-Tunisian-German production.

Besides these three films, it was a poor night for European titles at the festival, as they failed to come out on top in any other category that the continent’s films qualified to compete in, including any of the documentary prizes.
