The TV Beats Forum has announced its jam-packed programme of industry initiatives for 2021. The two-day conference, which is part of the drama series-orientated strand organised by Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, is set to take place in Tallinn and online from 19-20 November.

The 2021 programme will delve into various aspects of the booming series-production landscape and compare it to film production, plus it will present several high-profile case studies, panel discussions and fireside chats alongside a number of promising new drama-series projects.

The forum will kick off with Rahul Patel, from Ampere Analysis, introducing a recent report on the topic of global streaming platforms driving the internationalisation of popular TV shows and films. Next, a discussion between Petra Larsson (Cmore), Filippa Wallestam (NENT Group/Viaplay), Toomas Luhats (Jupiter) and Daria Bondarenko (Start) will offer the streamers’ perspective on what attracts wider audiences and what the future holds for the series market compared to that of film production.

In addition, a fireside chat with screenwriters will look into different techniques and artistic and financial outcomes when developing series versus films, followed by a panel gathering several acknowledged producers who will share their takes on the pros and cons of producing series versus films, and then another fireside chat with Finnish film and drama series director Dome Karukoski.

Moreover, this year’s conference will take a closer look at the Nordic market. In detail, Ivar Køhn will introduce Nordic 12, a unique collaborative programme between the major players in the region’s drama series market, focusing on the volume and quality of Nordic drama on TV and streaming services. The presentation will be followed by a discussion on creating a similar solution for the Baltics, including contributions from the heads of three public broadcasters. Later, Mette Bjerregaard, of DR Sales, will introduce the most recent hot series and projects from Scandinavia. Finally, Jan Erik Holst, from Film Archive Norway, will invite the audience to take a closer look at how NRK has moved from traditional television-play production to modern drama series and film production in the last 60 years.

There will also be room for discussing some interesting case studies. The first will centre on Fractures, an Icelandic medical drama directed by Eva Sigurdardottir, and penned by Vala Thorsdottir and Kolbrun Anna Bjornsdottir. The second contribution will see producer Nebojsa Taraba talking about the Croatian show The Paper, picked up by Keshet and sold to Netflix. Furthermore, Elisa will present its new line-up of original series completed this year. Lastly, the TV Beats Forum will showcase different series in production that are set to premiere in 2022, alongside the screenings of around 20 brand-new series from the region and beyond, including several premieres.

The topic of budgeting and financing will be covered at two dedicated events. The first is a case study by Patrick Fisher, Richard Kondal and Matti Halonen, who will explain how the financing methods for films and TV series differ from each other. The second is organised by Stage 32, the largest global community of content creators and content buyers in entertainment, which will invite audience members to join a discussion called “How Local Stories Can Travel Around the World” as well as master classes on pitch-deck preparations and drama-series financing.

The conversations and panel discussions at TV Beats Forum will be led by Marike Muselaers, co-CEO at Lumière, and Johanna Karppinen, head of International at Post Control Helsinki.

Talking about this year’s programme, Jevgeni Supin, the manager of the TV Beats Forum, commented: “We are very proud that TV Beats Forum, taking place for the third time, has, over a short period, established very good co-operation with acknowledged partners such as Stage 32, MIDPOINT and Elisa, so we are able to create an interesting and insightful programme for professionals in the region and beyond.”
