Premiered at Locarno in 2017, Hlynur Pálmason’s debut skilfully combines elements of psychological drama with deadpan, offbeat moments. The story follows the odyssey of two brothers, Emil (Elliott Crosset Hove) and Johan (Simon Sears), who work for a limestone factory in a small town in Eastern Denmark. While at first glance their existences may seem repetitive and characterised by a number of routines and rituals, a violent feud between them and another family is ready to erupt and set to shake up their lives.

Praised for its star-studded cast and its dark humour, Hans Petter Moland’s action-thriller flick centres on Nels Coxman (played by Liam Neeson), a snowplow driver married with Grace (Laura Dern) and upended after his son’s murder. The man begins a vengeful hunt for Viking (Tom Bateman), the drug baron he holds responsible for the killing, eliminating his associates one by one. As Nels draws closer to Viking, his actions will bring even more unexpected and violent consequences, as he proves that revenge is all in the execution.

One of the most prominent auteurs in Estonian cinema, in Free Range Veiko Õunpuu (Autumn Ball, The Temptation of St. Tony, The Last Ones), follows a film critic called Fred (Lauri Lagle), who gets fired after writing a destructive review of a celebrated movie. Even if his job is gone, Fred wishes to keep enjoying a hedonistic lifestyle. One day, however, his girlfriend tells him she is pregnant and Fred is thus forced to choose between living the life he wants or conforming to society’s expectations.

Ursula Meier’s sophomore feature, premiered at the 2012 Berlinale, revolves around twelve-year-old Simon (Kacey Mottet Klein), who lives with his older sister, Louise (Léa Seydoux), in a housing complex below a luxury Swiss ski resort. The young boy support his sister’s selfish lifestyle by stealing equipment from wealthy skiers, then refurbishing and reselling it. What can go wrong?

A loose adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s short story The Wife presented in Cannes’ main competition in 2014, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Anatolia-set drama follows Aydin (Haluk Bilginer), a retired actor and owner of a small hotel who lives with his young wife Nihal (Melisa Sözen) and his recently divorced sister Necla (Demet Akbağ). One unexpected event, however, will shatter this relative calm. One day, Aydin and his assistant Hidayet are driving down to the village when a stone shatters the window. It was thrown by İlyas, the son of one of Aydin’s tenants who is several months behind in the rent.
