Principal photography has begun in Croatia on Pierre Morel’s new effort, an action-thriller flick titled Canary Black. Morel is best known as the director of Taken [+leggi anche:

scheda film], a low-budget indie thriller which grossed almost $300 million worldwide (circa €303 million) and spawned two sequels and a TV series, making it one of the few indie franchises in history to gross $1 billion (circa €1.013 billion) worldwide.
The plot of Canary Black, penned by Matthew Kennedy, centres on a top CIA operative called Avery Graves (Kate Beckinsale, of the Underworld saga), who is blackmailed by terrorists into betraying her own country to save her kidnapped husband. Cut off from her team, she turns to her underworld contacts to survive and help locate the coveted intelligence that the kidnappers want. Betrayed at every turn, she must rely on her cutting-edge training and primitive fighting skills in a deadly race to deliver a ransom that could trigger a global crisis. Rupert Friend (the TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anatomy of a Scandal) is also attached to the main cast.

Canary Black is being produced by Sébastien Raybaud and John Zois for UK-based outfit Anton, Carsten Lorenz, Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin for Sentient Entertainment (USA), Jeff Elliott for Brickell & Broadbridge International (USA), and Marina Grasic for Oakhurst Entertainment (USA). Igor A. Nola, of Zagreb-based MP Filmska Produkcija, will serve as the Croatian service producer. Morel and Beckinsale will also serve as executive producers. Anton, Brickell & Broadbridge International and Oakhurst Entertainment are financing the picture. The UK firm is also in charge of the project’s worldwide rights and will be selling it at the American Film Market this month.
