The results of the third Eurimages Project Evaluation Session of 2022 have just been announced. Further to recommendations made by independent experts meeting online, the Executive Committee of the Fund has decided to support 24 feature films, including 4 documentary and 3 animation features, for a total amount of €6,707,000. Of the 24 projects supported during the session, 13 were directed or co-directed by women. This represents 53.7% of the total funding awarded.

The films supported include the new work by acclaimed directors such as Portugal's Miguel Gomes, whose latest effort The Tsugua Diaries [+leggi anche:

graced last year's Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and who has another film in the can (Selvajaria, an adaptation of Brazilian novel Rebellion in the Backlands by Euclides da Cunha), who has received €500,000 for Grand Tour (Portugal/Italy/France/Germany), a film which will take us along the Grand Asian Tour of fiancées Edward and Molly in 1918, from Burma to China, in an emotional and physical journey uniting East and West, gender and sex, time and space, reality and fiction, world and cinema. competed in the 2017 Berlinale, has received €415,000 for her new project, Justa (Portugal/France). Two Spanish filmmakers are also in the selection: Javier Rebollo, known for Lo que sé de Lola [+leggi anche:

, has received €300,000 for his new project They Will Be Dust (Spain/Italy/Switzerland).

Other established filmmakers that have received funding for their new projects are France's Emmanuel Finkiel (€140,000 for Mariana's Room, a co-production between France, Israel, Hungary and Belgium), Finland's Miia Tervo (€360,000 for The Missile, a co-production between Finland and Estonia), Denmark's Charlotte Sieling (€420,000 for Way Home, a co-production between Denmark, Norway and Germany) and Serbia's Szabolcs Tolnai (€175,000 for Cycling with Zoli the Turk, a co-production between Serbia and Slovakia).

Three second fiction features have also been funded: Foreign Tongue (France/Germany) by France's Claire Burger (her second feature as a solo filmmaker after Real Love [+leggi anche:

, with €149,000; Melting of the Ruler (Montenegro/Italy/Serbia/Croatia) by Montenegro's Ivan Salatić, with €170,000; and Rome (Denmark/Italy/Sweden) by Denmark's Niclas Bendixen, with €400,000.

On the other hand, the supported first fiction features are All We Imagine as Light (France/Netherlands/Luxembourg/India) by India's Payal Kapadia, whose previous documentary A Night of Knowing Nothing [+leggi anche:

duo Elsa Kremser-Levin Peter, with €300,000; Titanic Ocean (Greece/France/Romania/Germany/Spain) by Greece's Konstantina Kotzamani, with €500,000; Blue Banks (Romania/France) by Romania's Andreea Cristina Bortun, with €300,000; Milano (Belgium/Netherlands) by Belgium's Christina Vandekerckhove, with €257,000; and Rabia (France/Germany/Belgium) by Germany's Mareike Engelhardt, with €290,000. 

The animation films financed are The Crystal Planet (Slovakia/Czech Republic/Croatia) by Croatia's Arsen Anton Ostojić (with €149,000), Living Large (Czech Republic/Slovakia/Belgium/France) by Czech Republic's Kristína Dufková (with €393,000) and The Faun (France/Poland/Romania) by Italy's Augusto Zanovello (with €450,000).

Regarding the supported documentaries, the titles are Things We Said Today (Romania/France/Belgium) by veteran Romanian filmmaker Andrei Ujica (with €137,000), Flowers of Ukraine (Poland/Ukraine) by Ukraine's Adelina Borets (€49 000), Pure Unknown (Italy/Switzerland/Sweden) by Italy's Valentina Cicogna and Mattia Colombo (with €98 000) and The Song of Breathing (Switzerland/Italy) by Switzerland's Simona Canonica (with €120,000).

Lastly, the Board of Management of Eurimages approved the creation of a series of New Lab Awards aimed at promoting and celebrating both established and emerging non-conventional filmmakers and visual artists known for their daring work, to give them greater visibility and to concretely support their ongoing careers. Three calls for proposals will be launched simultaneously at the end of February 2023 to select, for the period 2024 - 2026, the two initiatives that will present the Eurimages New Lab Awards; the markets that will present the Eurimages Co-production Development Awards, and the events that will benefit from Eurimages’ sponsorship.
