Yesterday, 20 December, the Berlin International Film Festival announced a raft of new titles which will take part in its 73rd edition, set to unspool from 16-26 February 2023. In detail, the gathering announced some of the films and series which will be showcased in the Berlinale Special, Series, Forum and Forum Expanded strands.

According to the programmers, this years' Berlinale Special will “captivate audiences with its variety of formats and a multifaceted programme,” whilst the Berlinale Series “will once again offer an exclusive first look at new series productions from around the world.”

(Germany), a show based on the bestseller of the same name penned by Frank Schätzing. The ZDF/Beta Film-produced series follows an international group of scientists who do their research on mysterious ocean phenomena that become a global threat. The festival will premiere the first three episodes of the eco-thriller series directed by Barbara Eder, Luke Watson and Philipp Stölzl. Among the cast members is Leonie Benesch, one of this year’s European Shooting Stars.

(Germany/Morocco), starring John Malkovich in the lead role along with Geraldine Chaplin and emerging German actors such as Louis Hofmann, Alexander Fehling, Lilith Stangenberg and Tom Xander. Another buzzy title on many festival attendees' watchlist will be Alex Gibney's “multilayered” documentary feature about Boris Becker Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker [+leggi anche:

(UK/USA), “the young talent who conquered Wimbledon and, after having inflamed a country, has fallen with same grandness.”

Meanwhile, the first eight films of the Forum programme will aim to “explore the possibilities of the voice-over, dare to let text and image diverge or work with a deliberately restricted stock of images to allow their soundtracks to reverberate all the more.” Among this year’s European picks are Fiona Tan’s father-daughter epistolary tale Dearest Fiona [+leggi anche:

Finally, the German festival also announced the 204 participants of this year’s Berlinale Talents. The finalists, coming from 68 different countries, were chosen out of 3,000 applications. Moreover, Todd Field, Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss and Hildur Guðnadóttir will speak about their creative collaboration on TÁR in a public talk.
