A new series called The Boy That Never Was will be out in April 2024. Earlier this year, Irish pubcaster RTÉ announced the making of the show, which is an adaptation of Karen Perry’s 2014 book of the same name.

Penned by Jo Spain and David Logan, The Boy That Never Was tells the story of a three-year-old Irish boy who disappears during an earthquake in Morocco. Three years later, his father becomes obsessed that a boy he has spotted in Dublin is his son. The events that follow tear apart his marriage and expose secrets about the night their child went missing.

), Kerr Logan (North Sea Connection, Alias Grace) and Simon Callow (The Witcher).

Hannah Quinn is attached to direct the project. She is best known for having been at the helm of several episodes of popular shows such as The Gone, North Sea Connection, Vikings: Valhalla, Fate: The Winx Saga, The Stranger and the soap EastEnders. For her direction of Vikings: Valhalla, Quinn snagged the IFTA Award for Best Drama Director last year.

The Boy That Never Was was filmed on location in Morocco and Ireland. This week, UKTV and France Télévisions disclosed that they had pre-bought the series.

The show is being produced by Dublin-based outfit Subotica, with backing from Screen Ireland, the country’s audiovisual agency. Subotica’s Aoife O’Sullivan and Tristan Orpen Lynch are serving as the executive producers alongside RTÉ’s David Crean and Dermot Horan, and Screen Ireland’s Andrew Byrne. Abacus Media Rights, an Amcomri Entertainment company, is selling the show worldwide.
