It’s beginning to look a lot like festival season. The autumn’s array of new European cinema comes into greater focus with the announcement of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery strand, this year showcasing 24 premieres from 25 countries. And there’s also the matter of TIFF’s audience favourite Midnight Madness section, with Coralie Fargeat returning for opening night with her Cannes winner The Substance [+leggi anche:

Of the 15 world and international premieres of European titles in Discovery, a few stand out as the most intriguing. Durga Chew-Bose, best known as a culture writer and author, is making her writing and directing debut with Bonjour Tristesse [+leggi anche:

scheda film], the second major adaptation of the novella by Françoise Sagan; Otto Preminger directed the first in 1958, featuring an iconic turn by Jean Seberg. Sticking to its original timeframe of the 1950s, the glamorous cast is led by Lily McInerny, Claes Bang and Chloë Sevigny.

Filmmakers in Discovery will be hoping to follow similar fortunes to some of its alumni, which include Christopher Nolan, Ildikó Enyedi, Alfonso Cuarón, Maren Ade, Yorgos Lanthimos and Barry Jenkins.
