Besides a rich selection of films (see the news) unspooling at its 31st edition (20-27 October, Sibiu), Romania’s longest-running documentary gathering, the Astra Film Festival, also offers exciting opportunities for young documentary professionals via its industry platform, DocTank. The programme consists of pitches, mentoring sessions and master classes held over five days between 21 and 25 October.
The selected projects are Luiza Pârvu and Toma Peiu's How Come We Ended up Here? (Romania/USA), Arko Okk's Definition of Madness (Estonia), Denia Oniga's Kaleidoscope (Romania), Marek Vaňous's Ratafák – Puppet of Fear (Slovakia), Diana-Elena Munteanu's The Digs (Romania/France), Alexa Bakony's Highways of Hope (Hungary), Ruxandra Gubernat's Love Porn (Romania) and Michal Varga's The Fugitive (Czech Republic). The full list, including associated producers and production companies, follows at the end of this article.
The festival has always showed an interest both in appealing to younger generations, via Astra Junior, and in educating future film professionals. For the first time, Astra will host the DocStudent Hub, an event at which students and professors from six European film schools in Prague, Zagreb, Vilnius, Bratislava, Zlín and Cluj-Napoca will participate in workshops, master classes and hands-on activities in the domains of documentary filmmaking, production and distribution. The programme was developed by the National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest and the Astra Film Festival.
Regarding the gathering’s involvement in giving a voice to young documentary filmmakers, Astra artistic director Csilla Kató fondly remembers for Cineuropa the first few editions of the DocSchool competition, when film students from neighbouring countries would come to Sibiu by hitchhiking. “The Astra Film Festival has always been a student-favourite destination both because of our student competition and because it has been the perfect environment to sharpen ideas, to reconsider strong beliefs, to meet, to confront one another, to feel solidarity or totally disagree, and of course, to learn about documentary cinema. There were times in the early days of the festival, from 2000-2010, when students from Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova and from the main university centres of Romania used to come to the festival by hitchhiking. DocStudentHub continues this great tradition in a new form, giving students the opportunity to complete their documentary film studies in a festival environment,” Kató explains, adding that as many as 60 European students will take part in the programme.
