Cannes hosts a big-screen celebration in May, and a small- and very-small-screen one in October. In the context of MIPCOM Cannes (21-24 October), the French city will host screenings of upcoming European series, such as Ena. La reina Victoria Eugenia, presented by Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, depicting the life and struggles of the titular queen, the granddaughter of British monarch Queen Victoria, who had – to put it mildly – trouble adapting to the Spanish Court. The international cast, led by Kimberly Tell (as Victoria Eugenia) and Juan Amargos (as King Alfonso XIII), will be in attendance to present the show.
As it happens, Spain is also the Country of Honour at the 40th-anniversary edition of the industry gathering, and the dedicated events will include a presentation of new TV content and – among other highlights – a keynote address from showrunner and director JA Bayona and creative producer Diego Betancor, who will discuss trends in filmmaking and introduce a promotional campaign called “Spain, Where Talent Ignites”.
Rise of the Raven, presented by Beta Film and produced by Hungary, is another European series premiere that’s eagerly awaited at MIPCOM Cannes. The story, set in the 15th century, will revolve around a few noble families from European cities – namely, Warsaw, Belgrade, Vienna and Rome – who vie for power and influence.
During the Diversify Awards event, prizes will be presented for the eighth time to TV shows that champion diversity and inclusion in categories that include representation of race and ethnicity, disability, and LGBTQIA+. Among the European nominees are scripted and non-scripted productions from the UK, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland and Belgium.
The programme is complemented by discussion panels, where topics such as audience engagement and AI will be covered, alongside case studies as well as conversations with and between global streamers. This is capped off by meetings with commissioners, a programme showcase and various networking sessions.
