Rebecca Zlotowski, Lukas Dhont, Carla Simón, Claire Burger, Filippo Meneghetti, Hubert Charuel, Guillaume Brac, Clément Cogitore, the duo Fanny Liatard - Jérémie Trouilh, Rachel Lang, Emmanuel Marre, and more recently Jonathan Millet are just a few of the many young filmmakers whose talent has bloomed to dazzling effect following their participation - armed with their debut feature film projects - in the Angers Workshops, founded in 2005 by the late Jeanne Moreau and the Angers European First Films Festival.

The 20th edition of the programme which is kicking off today for five days as part of the festival’s 37th edition (read our article) will provide four women directors (Nyima Cartier, Mathilde Elu, Belgium’s Valentine Lapière and Kahina Le Querrec) and their male counterpart Paul Vincent de Lestrade with an opportunity to perfect their first film projects. And those on hand to advise them this week, from an artistic and technical standpoint, include filmmakers Thierry de Peretti, Lukas Dhont and Guillaume Brac, screenwriter Fanny Burdino, director of photography Amine Berrada, composer Delphine Malausséna and her colleague Wissam Hojeij, casting director Julie Allione and producer Frédéric Jouve (Les Films Velvet).

For the record, the projects gracing the 2024 Angers Workshops included Nouveau monde by Margaux Elouagari, À la recherche du miraculeux by Mathilde Chavanne, Hôtel Saga by Clara Lemaire Anspach, Enfin seuls by Marie Loustalot and Le courage des oiseaux (aka Je ne connais pas de monde meilleur) by Mathilde Profit.

This year’s selected projects are as follows:

Chien noir - Nyima Cartier
Co-written by Samuel Doux
Production: Mabel Films (France), in co-production with 2.4.7. Films (France)
Claire is barely 30 and works in a start-up founded by two ambitious young men called Arthur and Benjamin. While celebrating their first round of funding, Benjamin sexually assaults Claire. The young woman collapses and is never heard from again. She stays at home, stunned. That is, until she meets a mysterious dog, a new companion who gives her the strength to stand up to her attacker.

Une de perdue, une de perdue - Mathilde Elu
Production: Films Grand Huit (France)
Camille has a tendency to fall in love too quickly, scaring off all the girls she meets. She shouldn’t be rushing, but time isn’t on her side: her friends are getting married in three weeks and she refuses to be the only single person there. So she decides to ride her tandem bike from Nantes to Crozon, as hurried and as creepy as ever, determined to find a chick along the way! Her biological clock is ticking, global warming is worsening and the pressure is on.

Passer l’hiver - Valentine Lapière
Co-written by Judith Perrin
Production: Roue Libre Production (Belgium)
37-year-old single mother Sandra is fighting to regain custody of her foster children, having been forced to abandon them a few months earlier. Plagued by remorse and driven by immense love, Sandra is prepared to do anything it takes to make amends. But the harshness of the legal system and the precariousness of her daily life soon leave Sandra reeling.

La Faille - Kahina Le Querrec
Co-written by Maïté Sonnet
Production: Améthyste Films (France)
It’s the end of August and Maria has just turned eighteen, meaning that she has to leave the home that has cared for her to date. All she can think of is how to get back to her mother, whom she hasn't seen since she was eight. She only knows two things about her: that she's a cleaner in a luxury hotel and that she lives in Biarritz. Alone for the first time in her life, Maria sets off to find her parent.

Helter Skelter - Paul Vincent de Lestrade
Production: Need Productions (Belgium)
14-year-old Eva has been brought up in a radical nationalist extremist group by a single father who has taught her everything she knows and whom she admires more than anything. Until death finds its way into her life.
