Brendan Canty’s Christy is set to open the Generation 14plus section of the upcoming Berlinale, running from 13-23 February (see the news). Christy was penned by Alan O’Gorman and marks Canty’s feature debut. The film follows two estranged brothers, shaped by turbulent childhoods in the care system, who are unexpectedly brought together under one roof, forcing them to confront their past and redefine their future. The cast includes Danny Power, Diarmuid Noyes and Emma Willis, with Chris Walley, Alison Oliver and Helen Behan playing supporting roles.
Canty first gained prominence thanks to his direction of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” music video, a breakout moment in his career. Since then, Canty has been directing music videos and adverts as well as artistic projects. In 2017, he helmed the short For You (starring Barry Keoghan), followed in 2019 by Christy, the short that laid the groundwork for his feature debut. Moreover, he has won several awards for his latest short, Atali'i O Le Crezent (Sons of the Crezent), including the Audience Award and Best Director at Show Me Shorts, Best Cork Short at the Cork Film Festival, and Best Irish Short at Still Voices.
Commenting on the selection of the film at the prestigious A-list gathering, Keith Potter, head of Feature Film at Screen Ireland, said: “Our huge congratulations to writer Alan O’Gorman, director Brendan Canty and the entire team behind Christy on being selected to open the Berlinale’s Generation strand this February, in what has been a stellar week for Irish film. Screen Ireland is delighted to see Irish film making its mark at the Berlinale once again – particularly in the same Generation stand that showcased The Quiet Girl [+leggi anche:
