scheda film], Miri Ian Gossing and Lina Sieckmann explore the merfolk subculture through the lens of social justice activist and real-life siren Una the Mermaid (Gina Rønning). The film blends the science fiction, road movie and documentary genres to examine a subculture that, as described in the press materials, uses fantastical imagery to address collective trauma, the politics of the body and the desire for a lifelong transformation. The pic will be showcased in the Forum section of this year’s Berlinale (13-19 February – see the news).
Rønning stars alongside Moth Rønning-Bötel, Rei Spider Barnes, Jason Bötel and Mark Ginsberg.
Sirens Call is a German-Dutch co-production being produced by filmfaust, in collaboration with Schalten Und Walten, and in co-production with partners Elbe Stevens Films and ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel. Together with Gossing and Sieckmann, producing are Claus Herzog-Reichel and Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay.
Canada’s Syndicado is in charge of its world sales. The sales agent has recently boarded another Berlinale title, Denis Côté’s Paul, set to celebrate its world premiere in the Panorama sidebar (see the news).
