Words Across Europe has announced the launch of applications for its 2025 Writers' Room Programme, marking the second edition of this innovative initiative. As Europe’s first writers' room programme conducted entirely in virtual reality (VR), the programme offers emerging and experienced screenwriters the opportunity to improve their craft in an immersive, collaborative environment without geographical constraints.
Bridging industry practices from both sides of the Atlantic, Words Across Europe is designed for writers who thrive in dynamic, fast-paced creative settings. The programme enables participants to develop original television series concepts while engaging with professionals and peers in a VR-powered writers' room. Unlike conventional video conferencing tools, the VR environment fosters a more interactive and engaging atmosphere, simulating the in-person experience of a traditional writers' room.
The initiative also aims to reduce logistical barriers such as travel costs and time constraints while minimising its carbon footprint. Each of the nine selected participants will receive a VR headset and any necessary training, ensuring that they can fully utilise the technology to collaborate effectively. The concepts will then be presented to leading industry players, providing valuable exposure and opportunities for future collaboration.
Words Across Europe connects participants with leading television industry figures. The 2024 edition featured mentorship from high-profile executives and creators, including Johnathan Young (executive producer, former VP at HBO Central Europe), Morad Koufane (head of International Scripted Series at France Télévisions), Alexandra Finlay (VP of Scripted International Co-Productions at A+E), and Robert Franke (vice president Drama at ZDF Studios). Additional guidance was provided by professionals such as Andre Bormanis, known for his work on Star Trek and The Orville, and Laura Andrews, commercial director of UK Drama at ITV Studios.
Reflecting on her experience, 2024 participant Denise Deegan praised the programme’s impact on her career: “There is no comparison with the other television experiences I have attended. This is by far the best one. I improved my writing abilities, got to know what it is like being a showrunner, explored the industry (which came handy in other projects), and met wonderful authors.”
Applications for the 2025 edition are now open, with a deadline set for 7 April.
