The documentary follows now-middle-aged Sang, one of countless children left behind by American soldiers after the Vietnam War. Abandoned and stigmatised due to his mixed heritage, he spends a lifetime longing for the father he never had. When he unexpectedly locates his gravely ill father in the United States, he becomes determined to meet him, although he must pay a heavy price: leave his wife, daughter, and grandson behind in Vietnam. In an alien land, his dream of belonging turns into a reality he never expected, in a society that sees him as an outsider and in a family that never even knew he existed.

Mliczewska, who spent eight years making the film, says: “Sang’s quest is not just about finding his father – it’s about finding himself. The story of Amerasians is one of the most forgotten legacies of the Vietnam War, and yet, its impact still lingers. Meeting Sang was life-changing for me. His story is a mirror reflecting the wounds of history, but it also holds a message of resilience and hope. Through this film, I want to give voice to those who have been erased from history and show that even the deepest scars can lead to healing.”

Child of Dust was shot by Mikael Lypinski and edited by Marcin Sucharski and Mateusz Romaszkan, while Joaquin Garcia composed the score. It was produced by Mliczewska and her company Ya Man Studio (Poland), Chi-Minh de Leo for Clubhouse Films (Vietnam), Antonio Russo Merenda for Ginestra Film (Sweden), Michal Sikora for Lonely Production (Czech Republic), with Bao Ngyuen on board as producer and Jim Stark as associate producer. Polish public broadcaster TVP and Al Jazeera Documentary also participated, and it was supported by the Polish Film Institute, the Swedish Film Institute, the Czech Film Fund, and Creative Vouchers (Czech Republic).
