Having served as the Social Democratic Chancellor of Austria from 1970 to 1983, Bruno Kreisky has left his mark on the small alpine country. Apart from spearheading several significant social and political reforms, often referred to as the "Kreisky era”, he was also known for his stand on international diplomacy, positioning Austria as a bridge between East and West, and as one of the few Western leaders to engage with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) openly.

Even as a charismatic, but often controversial leader, and to this day a legend amongst Austrian social democrats, one does, however, always have a starting point in life. A life that shapes one’s views and passions. This is what Austrian director Harald Sicheritz wants to examine with the biopic Bruno - The Young Kreisky, which is currently shooting. The film will show the young Kreisky, who, as the tagline reads, “did the improbable out of conviction and had a clear stance on the events and developments of his time”.

The main roles are played by Nils Arztmann and Maya Unger, with Soi Schüssler, Noah Perktold, Simon Morzé, Juergen Maurer, Marie-Theres Futterknecht, Maresi Riegner, Lucas Englander, Thomas Stipsits, Proschat Madani, Tobias Resch, Gerhard Liebmann, Michael Steinocher, Johannes Silberschneider, Gerti Drassl and Adele Neuhauser in supporting roles.

For Sicheritz, the movie is not only about retracing Kreisky’s first steps, but also about drawing parallels with the challenges young people face today. The film is made for them, he states. “They will understand it. Because it shows timeless truths. Because it offers striking opportunities for identification. Because history is known to be the continuous repetition of the new.” Producer Danny Krausz adds, “We want to tell the story of a young man who seems to feel alienated in his own skin and is looking for a social identification other than the one his family background had probably ascribed to him as obvious.”

The film is shot by DoP Thomas Kürzl, edited by Paul-Michael Sedacek, and the production design conceived by Patrick S Müller. The costumes are designed by Monika Buttinger, Austrian Film Award winner for Corsage [+leggi anche:

The film is being produced by Danny Krausz, Milan Dor, Genia Krassnig and Lukas Zweng for Dor Film, with the support of the Austrian Film Institute (ÖFI/ÖFI+), Filmfonds Wien (FFW), ORF as part of the film/television agreement, the Province of Lower Austria, Carinthia Film Commission, Zukunftsfonds and the Province of Burgenland. The release is set for 2026, distributed locally by Alamode.
