The film Disforia, a dramatic thriller and horror feature directed by Christopher Cartagena, has been selected to participate in the official section of Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, which will take place from 19 to 26 September. The festival, one of the world's leading events for fantasy cinema, will host the international premiere of the Spanish filmmaker's debut feature film.

With an oppressive atmosphere and a constant crescendo of tension, charting a family’s desperate escape in a country on the verge of collapse, Disforia is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Aragonese author David Jasso. The screenplay was written by the director together with Joan-Pol Argenter. Esther (played by Fariba Sheikan, seen in films such as Raqqa: Spy vs Spy and Adiós Madrid), her husband Tomás (played by Eloy Azorín, known for All About My Mother and recently seen in series such as Raising Voices [+leggi anche:

and When No One Sees Us) and their daughter Say (Noah Casas, seen in El casoplón and Your Fault) take refuge in an old country house, hoping to sell it and escape abroad. But what should have been a new beginning soon turns into a nightmare: Tomás vanishes overnight, and a stranger (Claudia Salas, known for the series Elite and La ruta) appears at the door. From that moment on, Esther must face both physical and psychological threats in a desperate struggle to survive and uncover the truth.

“I’m thrilled that international audiences will be able to experience this story about a family's survival in extreme circumstances, which focuses on the resilience of mothers,” said director Cristopher Cartagena. The film has been acquired for international sales—excluding Spain—by Vorteks, the genre label of the global company Cercamon, which announced the agreement at the most recent Marché du Film in Cannes. In the words of David Kwok, Head of Acquisitions and Sales: “Christopher is a true rising star of genre cinema in Spain. He has made a visceral film, full of tension and unsettling terror, which constantly surprises.”

Disforia is produced by Cristopher Cartagena, Pablo López and Isabel G. Peralta, with Silvia Melero and Raúl Cerezo as executive producers for Aliwood Mediterráneo Producciones and Robot Productions.
