The Baltic Event Co-Production Market, an integral part of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, returns from 19-21 November with a selection of 15 feature-length projects in development. Bringing together debut works, second features and films by acclaimed directors, the market continues to serve as a vital meeting point for co-producers, financiers and sales agents across Europe. For the second year running, the line-up also includes films for children and youth, underlining the organisers’ ambition to broaden the event’s scope, and foster collaborations across genres and audiences.

Co-managers Helen Räim and Kärt Väinola highlight the diversity of this year’s line-up, which spans the Baltic states, the Nordics, and Southern and Western Europe. “Thanks to our Catalonian Focus and Austrian Spotlight, we’re witnessing the strengthening of creative bonds between regions,” noted Räim. “The stories represented this year support this evolution, offering producers fresh perspectives not only in financing, but also in audience reach.”

Väinola added that the inclusion of children’s and youth-orientated projects has once again proven both challenging and rewarding. “These stories tackle topics ranging from social media and mental health to classic and unconventional fairy tales. Narrowing them down was not easy, as each project had its own unique strengths. There’s an undeniable need for more quality stories for younger audiences, and we hope to keep supporting that growth.”

This year’s focus, Catalonia, is represented by two titles: Climacteric, a psychological drama directed by Liliana Torres (Mamífera [+leggi anche:

The Baltic region is once again prominently featured. Latvia is represented by Superheroine of the Wrong Side of Forty, a dark comedy by Dace Pūce (The Pit [+leggi anche:

Estonia presents two projects: Johnny, a historical drama by Jaak Kilmi chronicling the student years of future president Lennart Meri; and The Well, a psychological drama by debuting filmmaker Siiri Halko, exploring the turbulent bond between two foster sisters. Meanwhile, Vesna, a Lithuanian-French co-production written and directed by Rostislav Kirpicenko, follows a young priest resisting occupation in a small Russian-controlled town. The Ukrainian-Latvian co-production Alice Wants to Live by Denys Sobolev offers an intimate portrait of post-war life in Kyiv.

The Central and Eastern European presence is further reinforced by We’re Leaving, a Polish road movie exploring fractured family relationships, directed by Kamil Krawczycki (Elephant [+leggi anche:

scheda film]). No Salvation Coming, a Czech crime-drama by Vojtěch Strakatý, delves into a group of disillusioned millennials plotting a reckless heist. Meanwhile, Vanishing Point by Romanian filmmaker Tudor Giurgiu portrays a political prisoner’s dangerous escape across Eastern Europe. The children’s and youth selection offers four compelling titles. Little Mary, Always the Virgin, a Polish-French co-production by Anna Jadowska (Woman on the Roof [+leggi anche:

scheda film]), tells the story of a 16-year-old girl who attempts to sell her virginity online. Queen of England Stole My Parents, from Lithuanian director Ernestas Jankauskas, follows an adopted girl’s whimsical journey to reunite with her biological parents. One Brother Too Many, the second feature by Tove Undheim, captures a nine-year-old girl’s emotional upheaval after a new foster brother joins her family, while Heart Beats, directed by Johanna Lietha, is an Austrian-Swiss coming-of-age story about a young girl learning to navigate change within her family.

As in previous years, all projects will be presented to audiences on 19 November in a conversation with communication skills trainer Sibylle Kurz and creative consultant Márk Szilágyi. The projects will then be pitched to a jury comprising Els Hendrix (Eurimages), Katrin Pors (Snowglobe) and Jörg Schneider (ZDF). The Eurimages Co-Production Development Award, a €20,000 non-reimbursable grant, will support one feature-length fiction, animation or documentary project in development. The Producers Network Prize will also honour the most promising emerging producer.
