Galicia, the 1990s. Deza, a national police officer who's been suspended for the past three years, is trying to rebuild his life and win back his family. Everything changes when Estrada, a corrupt agent, takes advantage of Deza’s job insecurity and suggests a coup: stealing a large sum of money from a local businessman. What seemed like an easy way out turns into a nightmare where nothing goes to plan.

This is the synopsis of A morte nos teus ollos (lit. "Death in Your Eyes"), a thriller inspired by real events that is shooting in Vigo and other locations in the province of Pontevedra. It marks the fiction-feature directorial debut by Galician filmmaker trained in New York and at San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba) Guillermo de Oliveira, a seasoned advertising professional, responsible for the Goya-nominated documentary Sad Hill Unearthed [+leggi anche:

According to de Oliveira, “A morte nos teus ollos is about family: those who have one, those who want one, those who have lost one and those who reject it. It is the origin of all that is good and all that is bad, the beginning and the end of everything that happens to the characters. At the same time, the film is a portrait of power dynamics where violence and money are bargaining chips. And faced with that, the only element capable of intermittently breaking with the status quo is love.” That's because, its creator adds, the film “is a tale of corruption, family, redemption, violence, greed and guilt focused on two complex characters who will not leave the audience indifferent.

“It is an incident I have forged ties with throughout my life. My parents and some friends had direct contact with those involved, victims and perpetrators at different points along their paths. At 20, I conducted my first interviews with locals in the area and even wrote an article for a university assignment. But this time, I decided to dive into its mysteries,” said the filmmaker, who took part in the fourth edition of the Spanish Film Academy’s residencies and cites as references In Cold Blood by Richard Brooks and Nightcrawler by Dan Gilroy.

А morte nos teus ollos is being produced by Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano for Atresmedia Cine, Roberto Butragueño and Nuria Landete for Sideral, and Silvia Fuentes and Anxos Fazáns for Sétima. It is backed by the ICAA and AGADIC, and sees the participation of Netflix. The Spanish theatrical distribution will be handled by Buena Vista International.
