On one of the first stops of the year's awards race, last night's Golden Globes, a few European co-productions cemented their status as frontrunners of the season. Brazilian-European co-production The Secret Agent, winner of the Best Director award in Cannes in May and the Critics' Choice award for Best International Film a week ago, ended up winning two of the three categories it was nominated for: Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, for Wagner Moura's role. Also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, the film surprised in both categories, with Filho saying "this is a very important time in history to be making films, here in the US, in Brazil... Young American filmmakers, make films!" and Moura dedicating his win "to the ones sticking with their values in difficult moments" and to everyone in Brazil on their onstage acceptance speeches. The film has become Brazil’s second win in the former category after Walter Salles' Central Station in 1999, and Moura has become the first Brazilian to win in his category.

On the other hand, Sentimental Value, winner of Cannes Grand Prix in May and the second-most-nominated film of the awards' edition, settled for an only win, in the Best Supporting Actor category, for Stellan Skarsgård's work. After his biggest award win to date, the veteran Swedish actor expressed being very happy because "this is a small Norwegian film without a lot of money for advertising, which got to see this world in this way, and hopefully you'll see it in a cinema, because they are an extinguished species now. In a cinema, where the lights go down and eventually you share the pulse with other people, that is magic. Cinema should be seen in cinemas."
