Auditing firm Comscore recently published the annual results for the Spanish box office in 2025. Over the year, cinema attendance levels totalled 65 million viewers, while box-office revenue reached €453 million. These figures represent an 8% drop in admissions compared to 2024.

Indeed, the evolution of the Spanish box office showed an uneven pattern throughout 2025. While the first half of the year closed on a positive note, with a 3% increase on 2024, the second half ended with a 16% decline, mainly weighed down by the results in October (-28%) and November (-31%), which set alarm bells ringing.

The year’s best opening in Spain was Avatar: Fire and Ash, from the saga orchestrated by US filmmaker James Cameron, released on 19 December, with takings of €6.2 million during its opening weekend. However, the highest-grossing film in Spain last year was another US production: the live-action adaptation of the previously successful animated feature Lilo & Stitch, directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, which drew 3,829,674 people to dark rooms and grossed €24,709,359.

The best weekend at the Spanish box office last year coincided with the second week of Avatar in cinemas, from 26-28 December, with takings of €9.9 million. The week with the highest attendance levels was recorded from 30 May to 5 June, with a total of 2.08 million spectators. The single day with the highest turnout was 2 July, with 554,244 admissions.

Meanwhile, the ten provinces with the highest number of spectators were Madrid (21.5%), Barcelona (13.7%), Valencia (6.5%), Alicante (4.1%), Seville (3.7%), Malaga (3.7%), Murcia (3.5%), Biscay (2.5%), the Balearic Islands (2.5%) and Cadiz (2.3%).

As such, Spanish movies closed 2025 with a 19% market share (the same as in 2024), totalling 12 million viewers and box-office takings of €78 million. In terms of genres, action proved to be the most successful last year, followed by drama and animation.
