has cemented its strength in the US awards season by receiving no less than nine nominations for the 98th Oscars. Set to take place on 15 March, this year’s edition of the Academy Awards has put the spotlight on two US titles, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (with a history-making total of 16 nominations) and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another (with 13), although the film by the Norwegian director follows closely by making it in the main categories.

The Cannes Grand Prix winner is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, as well as in the acting categories, with all of the main cast in them (Renate Reinsve for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Stellan Skarsgård for Best Actor in a Supporting Role), and of course for Best International Feature, as Norway’s submission. A last nomination in the Best Editing category rounds up the film’s success.

With just one less nomination, a European co-production in English language is showing some strength too; Chloé Zhao’s UK-US co-production Hamnet [+leggi anche:

is nominated in categories such as Best Picture and Best Director, as well as Best Actress in a Leading Role, for Irish thesp Jessie Buckley, although co-star and fellow countryman Paul Mescal failed to make the final shortlist in his category. Another European co-production in English language with an Irish touch, Ireland-UK-US-South Korea co-production Bugonia [+leggi anche:

, directed by Greece’s Yorgos Lanthimos, follows with four nominations, making it into the Best Picture roster too, with star Emma Stone nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The Cannes Best Director and Best Actor winner managed to get into the running for Best Picture, Best International Feature and Best Actor in a Leading Role for star Wagner Moura, as well as the brand-new category Best Casting. The film already won in the former two categories in the recent Golden Globes (read news).
