Adapted by Emmanuelle Bercot and Armel Gourvennec from Sorj Chalandon’s eponymous novel, the story takes us back to 1934 and to a children’s detention centre in Belle-Île-en-Mer, where 56 kids - beaten and humiliated by their wardens - revolt and manage to escape. But, encircled by the sea, they’re soon captured and sent back to prison. All except one of them: Jules Bonneau, nicknamed The Bully, a tormented teen who finds refuge with a nurse and a fisherman with progressive ideas, called Anne and Jean Kadarn. Jules fights for survival, driven by the rage which has shaped him. In the midst of such violence, an unexpected light can pierce through.

L’Enragé is being produced by Sylvie Pialat and Benoît Quainon on behalf of Les Films du Worso and by Ardavan Safaee for Pathé Films, in co-production with France 2 Cinéma, Chapter 2, Same Player, Chi-Fou-Mi Productions and Belgium’s Umedia. Pre-purchased by Canal+, Netflix and France Télévisions, the feature film also enjoys support in the form of a CNC advance on receipts and via an array of SOFICA companies (Indéfilms, La Banque Postale Image, Cinécap, Cinémage, Cinéaxe, Imagellium, Sofitvciné, Cofimage and Palatine Etoile), Media Slate Funding and Procirep. The 59-day film shoot will continue in the Morbihan region (Port-Louis, Belle-Île-en-Mer, Quiberon) and in Finistère (Cap-Sizun) until 30 April, with Pierre Cottereau heading up photography. World sales and distribution in French cinemas will both fall to Pathé.
