The Malaga Film Festival will showcase the diversity of Spanish cinema in its 29th edition (6-15 March), with a programme featuring 263 audiovisual works across all its sections, alongside a wide variety of activities and events under the motto “Culture is encounter and Malaga, the best moment.”

The Official Selection will include 22 films (twelve Spanish and ten Latin American). In addition to the Spanish titles previously announced — Calle Málaga by Maryam Touzani, which opens the festival; Better Class by Víctor García León; and Después de Kim by Ángeles González-Sinde — the line-up also includes: Iván & Hadoum by Ian de la Rosa (presented this week at the Berlinale); The Good Daughter by Julia de Paz (winner at last November’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival – read more); My Dearest Señorita by Fernando González Molina (based on the 1972 film of the same name directed by Jaime de Armiñán); I Won’t Die For Love by debut filmmaker Marta Matute; Runner by Laura García Alonso; Mala bèstia by Bárbara Farré; Another League by Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz; Pizza Movies by Carlo Padial; and Welcome to Lapland by David Serrano.

Alongside these titles are the Latin American productions Red Hangar (Chile/Argentina/Italy) by Juan Pablo Sallato and The Garden We Dreamed (Mexico) by Joaquín del Paso, soon to be presented at the Berlinale; El guardián (Mexico/Spain) by Nuria Ibáñez; The Woman in the Line (Argentina/Spain) by Benjamín Ávila; A Thousand Pieces (Chile/Argentina/Spain) by Sergio Castro-San Martín; Ángeles (Mexico/Argentina) by Paula Markovitch; El corazón del lobo (Peru) by Francisco J Lombardi; and La hija Cóndor (Bolivia/Peru/Uruguay) by Álvaro Olmos Torrico. The line-up also includes two feature films directed by actors: Juana (Mexico) by Daniel Giménez Cacho, and Neurótica anónima (Cuba) by Jorge Perugorría.

In addition, 21 films (19 Spanish and two Latin American) will screen out of competition. The Spanish titles include 9 Lunas by Patricia Ortega (the director’s new film following Mamacruz, selected at Sundance); A Sucker's Born Every Minute by Arantxa Echevarria (the director’s follow-up to the Goya-winning Undercover); Hunting Day by Pedro Aguilera; A una isla de ti by Alexis Morante; Andy by Román Parrado; Auri by Violeta Salama; Cool Books by Andrés Salmoyraghi and Rafael López Saubidet; Dos días by Gonzaga Manso; Femení Singular by Xavi Puebla; Hora y veinte by Marc Romero; Hugo 24 by Luc Knowles; Los justos by Jorge A Lara and Fernando Pérez; Mallorca confidencial by David Ilundain; Solos by Guillermo Ríos; Todos los colores by Beatriz de Silva; Another Man by David Moragas; Un hijo by Nacho la Casa; Viaje al país de los blancos by Dani Sancho; and La familia Benetón +2 by Joaquín Mazón, closing film. The section also include the Latin American titles Bye Bye Paraíso by Kim Elizondo Navarro (Costa Rica/Colombia/Uruguay), and La casaca de Dios by Fernan Miras (Argentina/USA).

The film festival will also present Zonazine, its commitment to new cinema, now in its 23rd year. The section will screen the Spanish films La carn by Joan Porcel; Cuántica Rave by Paco L Campano; and We Are the Jungle by Gwai Lou (in co-production with Malaysia). It will also feature Oca (Mexico/Argentina) by Karla Badillo, premiered in Toronto; Aquella sombra desvanecía (Peru), directed by Samuel Urbina; Los nadadores (Argentina/Mexico/USA) by Sol Iglesias SK; and Casi desierto (Brazil/USA) by José Eduardo Belmonte.

Finally, the official non-competitive Series section will include: Acoustic Home by Alexis Morante; Cochinas by Andrea Jaurrieta, Laura M Campos and Núria Gago; Entre tierras 2 by Humberto Miró, Salvador García and David Montoya; La nena by Paco Cabezas; Millennial mal by Lorena Iglesias and Andrea Jaurrieta; A 100-million Reward by Nacho G Velilla; and Si es martes, es asesinato by Salvador Calvo and Abigail Schaaff.
