For the second time in its history, after Chinese director Wong Kar-wai in 2006, the Competition jury of the Cannes Film Festival will be chaired by an Asian filmmaker, as South Korean director Park Chan-wook will take on the role at the 79th edition (12 to 23 May) of the world’s most important film event. He steps into the shoes of French actress Juliette Binoche, who chaired the jury of the 2025 edition of the festival, steered by the duo Iris Knobloch (president) - Thierry Frémaux (general delegate).
Park Chan-wook has taken part in the Cannes Competition four times, winning the Grand Prix in 2004 for Oldboy, the Jury Prize in 2009 with Thirst and the Best Director Award in 2022 with Decision to Leave. He was also in the running for the 2016 Palme d’Or with The Handmaiden, and was selected twice in Competition at Berlin (in 2001 and 2007) and twice at Venice (in 2005, and last year with No Other Choice [+leggi anche:

“Park Chan-wook’s inventiveness, visual mastery, and penchant for capturing the multiple impulses of women and men with strange destinies have given contemporary cinema some truly memorable moments,” said festival president Iris Knobloch and director Thierry Frémaux. “We are delighted to celebrate his immense talent and, more broadly, the cinema of a country deeply engaged with the questioning of our time.”
