Filming has recently wrapped in Ourense on As augas (litt. “The Waters”), the debut feature directed by Galician actress Ledicia Sola (who has appeared in films such as Aces, Artificial Justice, Friends Till Death and Malencolía). Sola also wrote the screenplay and stars in the film. Marta Larralde (who appeared in the series Cocaine Coast, won Best Actress at Karlovy Vary for León and Olvido and saw Band Together released in Spanish cinemas earlier this year), Melania Cruz (Arima, Ons, the series Gangs of Galicia) and Lidia Veiga (The Dashed Lines) round out the main cast, alongside Toni Salgado (the series Rapa). At the heart of the film are four women, built around the relationships and tensions that arise when returning to a place from their past.
The plot follows Nora (played by Ledicia Sola), whose life takes an unexpected turn at the age of 43. After breaking up with her partner, she returns to the spring where she spent her childhood, hoping its waters will help heal all her troubles. Her friends Antía (Marta Larralde) and Marta (Melania Cruz) refuse to let her face this moment alone, and together they’ll make a decision that will change everything: to rethink their idea of family and build a new beginning rooted in friendship.
“I’m convinced that Ledicia Sola will be one of the most significant and surprising new voices in Spanish cinema next year with this essential, subtle and lucid film about four women who are ordinary yet extraordinary, shaped by events that are both extraordinary and ordinary. The performances of the four leading actresses are remarkable — they are all in exceptional form. It’s a surprisingly uplifting debut film about women and new family structures,” says producer Alfonso Zarauza of Maruxiña Film Company.
Daniel Froiz of Matriuska Producciones adds: “As augas has been a revelation in many ways, but above all because of its director, who also wrote the screenplay and plays the lead role with a clear and distinctive voice. The casting is another real highlight: the four actresses carry the film with such natural chemistry, crafting a relatable story that feels deeply grounded in reality – one we believe will resonate with a wide range of audiences. There was also something special about the shoot. A very warm, almost family-like atmosphere has been created, making everything run incredibly smoothly. All things considered, we are confident that audiences will embrace this film and its themes.”
As augas is produced by Maruxiña Film Company and Matriuska Producciones, with support from the Provincial Council of Ourense, AGADIC and the Galician Audiovisual Services Corporation (CSAG), among other collaborating organisations. Distribution in Spain will be handled by BTeam Pictures.
