Created by Natàlia Boadas (co-writer of series such as Vestidas de azul, among others) and Almudena Monzú (screenwriter on the series Puberty - Secrets, Lies, and Human Castles and Yo siempre a veces) and directed by Javier Ferreiro (creator and director of the series Mariliendre) and Monzú herself, the original series Las vecinas for the atresplayer platform has just begun filming. Two acclaimed actresses take on the central: Ane Gabarain (Goya Award winner for 20,000 Species of Bees and recently seen in Los justos and Gaua) and Nora Navas (winner of a Silver Shell and a Goya for Black Bread, another Goya for Libertad, and a nominee for her latest film My Friend Eva).

This drama, loosely inspired by real events, could follow in the footsteps of other Spanish dramas centred on neighbourhood conflicts – from Álex de la Iglesia’s film La comunidad to the series Aquí no hay quien viva and La que se avecina. The cast also features  Laura Weissmahr (Goya Award winner for Salve María and recently seen in I Won't Die for Love), Ana Rujas (series Cardo and La Mesías), Marian Álvarez (Goya winner for Wounded, who starred in this year’s comedy Better Class), Manolo Solo (Goya winner for The Fury of a Patient Man and a four-time nominee, who appeared at Cannes this year with Aquí), Carlos González (series Queer You Are, also at Cannes with La bola negra), Lorena López, Raquel Pérez and Roger Casamajor (La Mesías).

According to the creators: “In Las vecinas, the trial is a struggle for the truth that ultimately raises the question of what the truth actually is. It’s a courtroom drama that remains very true to how legal proceedings unfold in our country. What interests us most about the courtroom genre is its ensemble nature, because it’s not just about the conflict itself but everything it reveals about the people around it. We have a brilliant cast who embraced the challenge of boarding the emotional rollercoaster that is this war of narratives, where the battlefield is a courtroom.”

The series explores the fraught relationship between Josefina and Teresa, two neighbours who despise each other. After a decade of conflict that has torn apart the residents’ association and affected their loved ones, their feud finally ends up in court. Through the testimonies presented during the trial, viewers are transported to a past in which the two women seemed destined to meet. It is a story where hatred burns as intensely as love.

Las vecinas is produced by Atresmedia in collaboration with Suma Content — the company run by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, recent winners of the Best Director award at Cannes for La bola negra and producers of Superestar, Mariliendre, Vestidas de azul, Cardo and La Mesías,  the latter created by the pair themselves. Montse García, Andrea H. Catalá and Mariano Piñeiro act as executive producers.
