German director Miguel Alexandre’s Queen Silvia will have its world premiere as a special screening at MIPCOM CANNES, which runs from 12-15 October. The first episode of the six-part drama will screen in the Grand Auditorium on 13 October, followed by a Q&A with the cast and creative team.

Inspired by the real-life relationship between Sweden’s Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf, the series follows German-Brazilian interpreter Silvia Sommerlath and Sweden’s young Crown Prince Carl Gustaf from their first meeting during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich to their engagement four years later. Set across Munich, Stockholm and the French Riviera, the story traces a relationship that develops amid public scrutiny, royal tradition and the expectations surrounding the Swedish monarchy.

The series stars von Alicia von Rittberg (Charité, Becoming Elisabeth, Call My Agent! Berlin) as Silvia and Edvin Endre (Hammarskjöld - Fight for Peace, Vikings, The Playlist) as Carl Gustaf. The six-hour drama is directed by Alexandre (Sisi, Gran Paradiso, Shades of Happiness), who co-wrote the screenplay with Lisa Hofer (Black Island), serving as head writers, and Pauline Wolff (Stockholm Requiem, VAKA). Jallo Faber is the director of photography.

Carsten Kelber serves as showrunner for Pyjama Pictures and stated: “This love story is relevant and one of a kind. And, surprise: it does not follow a Cinderella narrative. Instead, it has a very modern take on relationship and marriage – depicting the lead character, Queen Silvia, who was way ahead of her time. And here we still are, half a century later, which best describes how epic this couple is.”

Queen Silvia is being produced by Germany’s Pyjama Pictures and Sweden’s Unlimited Stories, via Pia Lüke, Tim Bahalou and Frida Wallman, for Prime Video DACH and Nordics, and German free-to-air broadcaster SAT.1. The executive producers are Tina Ermuth, Frank Buchs, Kelber, Emil Wiklund, Manya Lutz-Moneim and Justus Riesenkampff. The production was supported by the German Motion Picture Fund (GMPF), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) and FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF). Munich-based Beta Film is handling its international sales. Queen Silvia is due to launch on Prime Video in 2027 in DACH and the Nordics, followed by its German free-TV premiere on SAT.1 four weeks later.
