Estonian filmmaker Ilmar Raag is in post-production with A Girl from Tallinn (Tüdruk Tallinnast), a six-part mystery-thriller that moves between the present day and the 1990s. The series wrapped filming in Tallinn in July after shooting in Kyiv and Lviv, and is now undergoing final editing and post-production.

The story unfolds across two timelines, connecting present-day Estonia and Ukraine with the turbulent early 1990s. After a storm reveals the remains of a young woman in a forest outside Tallinn, Estonian investigator Anna Petersen takes on the case and begins to uncover a murder that has remained unsolved for more than 30 years. Meanwhile, in present-day Kyiv, Ivan, a former criminal who has since rebuilt his life as a respectable businessman, encounters a young woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to Maria, the love of his life, who was murdered in Tallinn in the 1990s. As Anna’s investigation and Ivan’s obsession converge, the characters are drawn back into the unresolved events of the past, confronting questions of love, guilt, memory and identity.

Estonian actress Laura Peterson (In the Crosswind) leads the cast as Anna, alongside Ukrainian thesps Oleksandr Kobzar and Oleksandr Hrekov, and Bulgarian actress Velina Georgieva. The cast also includes Estonian performers Tõnu Oja (Goodbye Soviet Union), Piret Kalda (Mat the Cat) and Jonathan Peterson as well as Aleksandar Aleksiev (A Dose of Happiness).

Raag directs from a screenplay by Ukrainian writers Serhii Okhaltuyev, Olesya Lukyanenko and Iryna Zhygaljuk. The production's cinematographer is Tanya Dudnik. Raag is best known internationally for his features The Class, which won the Best Film Award at the Warsaw Film Festival, and Love Is Blind, which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. His subsequent work has also included television – most recently, the historical drama series Truth and Justice.

Shooting began in Kyiv in May and continued in Lviv before moving to Tallinn in July, with the final day of filming taking place in mid-July. Kyiv also doubled for parts of Tallinn in the early 1990s, allowing the production to recreate a period that has seen considerable change in the Estonian capital.

A Girl from Tallinn is an Estonian-Ukrainian-Bulgarian co-production, staged by Jevgeni Supin through Tallinn-based company Zolba Productions, in co-production with Kateryna Vyshnevska and Olesya Lukyanenko for Film.UA Group and Martichka Bozhilova for Sofia-based Agitprop. The project is being produced in cooperation with Eesti Telefilm/ERR and Go3, with Bulgarian broadcaster Nova Broadcasting Group also attached.

The series has received support from Creative Europe – MEDIA, the Bulgarian National Film Center, the Estonian Ministry of Culture and the Estonian Film Institute, alongside broadcaster and co-production participation from Go3, Eesti Telefilm and Nova. The series is planned to premiere on Go3 at the beginning of 2027, followed by a later window on the Estonian public broadcaster’s VoD platform, Jupiter. Viaplay Content Distribution is handling its international distribution.
