On Monday 21 September, on the border between the Rhône and Loire departments, shooting kicked off on Malaterre, the second fiction feature film by Stéphane Marchetti (a multi-award-winning documentary filmmaker whose trophies include a Golden FIPA and an Albert Londres Prize) following his head-turning movie Winter Crossing.

Heading up the cast are Manon Clavel (nominated for this year’s César and Lumière Acting Revelation awards for Kika, seen in The Blow this year and due to star in Une heure et demie en été next year), Philippe Rebbot (primarily acclaimed in In the Move for Love and À bicyclette, and soon to be seen in Mon fils président) and Sami Bouajila (crowned Best Actor in Cannes for Days of Glory, awarded the César and Lumière Best Actor trophies for A Son, which also earned him the Orizzonti acting prize in Venice, and recently seen in A Prophet: The Series). Likewise in on the action are newcomer Zinedine Beloufa (in his first screen role), Théo Cholbi (Eat The Night, The Night of the Twelfth), Michel Masiero (highly praised in Nobody’s Hero), Spain’s Albert Pla (especially impressive in the series La Mesias) and Youssef Mys.

Written by the director and Laurette Polmanss (nominated for the Best Original Screenplay César thanks to The Divide and in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay for An Impossible Love), the screenplay centres on Clarisse who lives alone on the family farm. She keeps the business going single-handedly while her father Simon is in prison for injuring a CRS riot police officer during a farmers’ protest. Once released, he discovers that Clarisse has become a “nourrice” (stash keeper) for drug traffickers in order to save the farm. But the father and daughter subsequently collide with a menacing drug trafficker called Vermeer who turns their family farm into an open-air prison…

Malaterre is produced by Bertrand Gore for Blue Monday Productions (with Nathalie Mesuret as associate producer), in co-production with France 2 Cinéma, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinéma and Belgian outfits Panache and La Compagnie Cinématographique. Pre-purchased by Canal+, Ciné+ OCS and France Télévisions, the feature is also backed by the SOFICA companies Cofimage and Palatine Étoile. The shoot will last 29 days, with Sébastien Goepfert (In a Whisper, Bloody Milk) heading up photography, and editing handled by Damien Maestraggi. The movie’s cinema release in France will fall to UFO Distribution.
