Charlie Brooker is preparing to return to Netflix with Charlie Brooker’s Blackmere, a new British crime comedy set to land on the platform in early 2027. Paddy Considine (Tyrannosaur, House of the Dragon), Georgina Campbell (Black Mirror, Cold Storage), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and Rory Kinnear (The Imitation Game, Southcliffe) head up the cast of the project, the title and first-look images of which were recently unveiled by Netflix.

The series, created by Brooker, follows Considine as Detective John Blackmere. Netflix describes the show as “an absurd comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller.” It zooms in on the aforementioned tormented detective, who leaves the rain-soaked Northern city of Bleakford for London to avenge his partner’s death and catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims. Netflix warns that the show “contains blood and frowning.”

Kinnear is the latest addition to the ensemble, joining the previously announced Considine, Campbell and Headey. When the project was first announced in 2025, without a title, Brooker described it as a departure from his long-running dystopian anthology Black Mirror. At the time, he commented, “I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release. I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it. I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”

Brooker has written the series alongside Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Daniel Maier and Joel Morris, with additional material by Victoria Asare Archer. It was directed by Al Campbell.

Before embarking on the making of this project, Campbell had worked as a television director with a background rooted primarily in comedy. He started as a director on Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe and later helmed Newswipe and Gameswipe, before moving into narrative television. His main credits include Code 404, Two Weeks to Live, Inside No. 9, The Change, Dead Pixels, Bad Education and the Brooker-produced Netflix special Death to 2020.

Brooker, Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones serve as executive producers, Mark Kinsella as co-executive producer. The show is produced by Richard Webb.

The production of Blackmere got under way in London in September 2025 and continued in Manchester the following month. The project had initially been announced under the working designation Untitled Charlie Brooker Project. Its official title was only revealed last month.

Brooker previously characterised the project as “very much not Black Mirror,” calling it “the most detective show of all time”. “It’s a deeply profound and profoundly serious crime thriller,” he added. He cited Columbo, Seven, The Bridge, The Killing and Knives Out amongst the works that informed the conception of the series.

Blackmere is slated to premiere globally on Netflix in early 2027.
