As International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) approaches its 34th edition, the industry gathering has just announced the full list of its selected Forum projects. The Forum takes place during IDFA (12-22 November), between 15-18 November, this year welcoming a total of 47 documentary projects (picked from among 859 entries) across the Forum Pitches, Roundtable Presentations, Rough Cut Presentations and IDFA DocLab Forum (new media) in the Dutch capital.

This year, the IDFA Forum is revising its presentation formats to help projects communicate more clearly the support they need, and to facilitate a better, more understanding relationship between them and the collaborators they will find. Under the revised structure, the projects will be showcased either to a larger audience at the Forum Pitches or in the more intimate setting of the Roundtable Presentations, allowing for more in-depth conversations.

“Despite the challenges of the market, in terms of both finance and distribution, we strongly believe that the IDFA Forum should provide space for filmmakers who approach their craft with courage and curiosity,” says Adriek van Nieuwenhuijzen, head of IDFA Industry.

In the line-up, there is a breadth of recognisable documentary names among the European co-productions, including Jiabiangou (France/Hong Kong) by Wang Bing, the return of Vitaly Mansky with Odesa.Mama (Czech Republic/Latvia), Roman Bondarchuk’s Recovery (Ukraine), Rachel Leah Jones’ Podium (You Have Three Minutes) (France/Switzerland/Canada) and Liang Zhao’s Ship of Fools (Netherlands), among others.

European filmmakers to watch hail from Greece in Rough Cut (Resisting Residents by Nikos Pilos and Arsinoi Pilou), Hungary in Forum Pitch and the Roundtable Presentations (Sonia – Searching for Balance by Rita Balogh and Peter Akar), and Georgia in Rough Cut (Oh Heart, Don't Be Afraid by Ana Kvichidze). The IDFA Forum boasts gender parity across its selection, while serving as a platform for up-and-coming documentarians from across the globe.
