After having kicked off in late August, the shoot for La neuvième rotation (lit. "The Ninth Rotation"), actor Côme Levin’s feature-length directorial debut, wrapped yesterday, 14 October. Standing out among the cast are Alice Belaïdi (An Ordinary Case, A Little Something Extra, the series Hippocrate), South Sudanese actress Anyier Anei (who made her breakthrough in Couture), Kim Higelin (nominated for the César Award for Most Promising Actress for Consent, seen this year in Species), Belgian thesp Johan Heldenbergh (nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actor for The Broken Circle Breakdown, in this year's Chemical Bond), Abou Sangaré (notably the winner of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Best Performance Award and of the European Film Award for Best Actor for Souleymane's Story), Abraham Wapler (Colours of Time, Microstar) and Bérénice Bejo (Best Actress Award at Cannes for The Past, César Award for Best Actress and Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actress for The Artist, seen last month at Toronto in the series Alice).
Written by the director together with Nathalie Saugeon (My Revolution), the screenplay centres on Marina, who returns to sea aboard the Ocean Spartacus, a humanitarian vessel embarking on its ninth mission in the Mediterranean. Under her command is a crew of highly trained maritime rescuers. Meanwhile, somewhere between Libya and Malta, more than 200 men are adrift aboard three boats, hoping to reach safety. They are exhausted, and a storm is approaching. Marina and her teams attempt to rescue them. Among them is a boy whose fate will be forever intertwined with Marina’s.
La neuvième rotation is being produced by Alain Attal for Trésor Films, and co-produced by France 2 Cinéma, Gaumont (which will handle the French theatrical distribution and is managing international sales), Issa Films and Belgian outfit Artémis Productions. Having been pre-purchased by Ciné+ OCS, Netflix and France Télévisions, the feature also benefits from the support of Sofica companies Cinecap, La Banque Postale Image and Cineaxe. The shoot took place in Marseille and Toulon, with Vincent Mathias serving as director of photography.
