The Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) has unveiled the programme for its 15th edition, which will take place from 28 October-4 November at various venues across Mallorca. The event will showcase more than 140 fiction films and documentaries, selected from over 1,500 submissions from 50 countries. The programme combines titles presented at major international festivals, emerging filmmakers, documentaries and a substantial representation of audiovisual productions from the Balearic Islands.
The Official Feature Film Competition will include several movies previously screened at Cannes and Venice. Among them is Fatherland by Paweł Pawlikowski, which won the Best Director Award, ex aequo, at Cannes this year. Produced by Edward Berger, the film will be presented in Mallorca by the German filmmaker himself, who will also receive one of the festival's Honorary Awards. Also competing are Ink by Danny Boyle, which opened the Venice Film Festival; The Debut, the latest work by Jesse Eisenberg; and Woman Unknown by May el-Toukhy, winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at Venice 2026. The competition is rounded off by Isola by Nora Jänicke and Primavera by Damiano Michieletto.
The Debut Feature Competition will bring together six international films. The festival will open on 28 October at Palma's Palau de Congressos with Club Kid by Jordan Firstman, which had its world premiere at Cannes before screening at Toronto, New York and San Sebastián. Meanwhile, The End of It by María Martínez Bayona will close the festival on 4 November. Premiered at Cannes and starring Rebecca Hall, the film explores themes of mortality, ageing and human relationships. The debut feature selection also includes Sender by Russell Goldman, Pretty Babies by Tyler-Marie Evans, Elena's Shift by Stefanos Tsivopoulos and Bubbles by Sebastian Husak.
The documentary line-up includes The Things We Regret by Simon Gullström, Miss Jobson by Amanda Sans Pantling, Chronicle of a Summer in Palestine by Ines Moldavsky and My Home of Wind and Sand by Patrick Wally. The programme also features documentary shorts, experimental cinema and music videos.
Local production will play an important role in Made in Baleares, a section that has been part of the festival since its creation in 2012 and which brings together 44 projects this year. The selection comprises 18 fiction shorts, five documentary shorts, two student films, six features – five documentaries and one fiction film – and 13 screenplays selected for the Script LAB. The initiative aims to facilitate connections between filmmakers from the islands and international industry professionals attending the festival.
Beyond the competitions, EMIFF will dedicate special screenings to some of its guests. Diane Kruger will receive the Evolution ICON Award, an honour also being bestowed upon German actress Iris Berben. Director Edward Berger, whose credits include All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, will be presented with the Evolution VISION Award, while cinematographer Matthew Libatique will receive the Cinematography ICON Award. The festival will also recognise Mallorcan costume designer and visual artist Pau Aulí, who came up with the costumes for The End of It, via the Evolution New Talent Award.
In parallel, the industry programme will include the fifth edition of Cinematography Focus, featuring discussions and activities devoted to cinematography, as well as a screening of Black Swan followed by a Q&A with Libatique. The Producers Club, taking place from 31 October-3 November, will address the search for co-production partners and the dynamics of international co-production. Other activities will include The Pitch, Innovation Focus – dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking – and a panel discussion on filming opportunities on the Balearic Islands.
Founded and directed by Sandra Lipski, the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival is thus marking 15 years of activity, combining a selection of international independent cinema with initiatives aimed at connecting the Balearic audiovisual industry with professionals from other countries.
