For its 24th edition, running from 16-19 November, the Stockholm Industry Days offers four packed days of talks, panels, workshops and, not least, sprightly pitching platforms. Concurring with, and part of, the Stockholm International Film Festival, running from 11-22 November, it will welcome faraway guests and talents as well as an array of industry professionals, potential collaborators and decision-makers from across the Nordics.
The main focus is Nordic fare: there's an exclusive pitching platform for Swedish first feature projects from the Stockholm and Gotland regions. The Alma Pitch forum for series invites alumni of the Alma Education programme for screenwriters for its inaugural edition this year. Launched in 2024, the Nordic Wave section is “for distinctive and bold Nordic voices” and also entails an entry in the official competition for the best project. Two short-film strands round off proceedings: 1KM Film and Nordic Shorts promote and encourage budding young filmmakers, doubtlessly another main focus here.
Four projects each will be presented in the Film Stockholm Debut & Gotland Debut and Alma Pitch: Series in Focus sessions. Five contenders have been picked for the Nordic Wave event, with some buzz already noticeable for several, including Ford, the highly anticipated first feature by Malin Ingrid Johansson, already a seasoned festival traveller with her shorts Madden and Deck 5b, rewarded at Toronto in 2024. Armed with capital lettering and distinctly Nordic diacritics, the thought-provokingly titled GØTUBRÅ is a Faroese series dealing with the dating game in the small North Atlantic archipelago, co-directed by Anna Maria Sloan and Annika Djurhuus Olsen. Like There Is No Tomorrow whisks the viewer away to another group of islands with a Scandinavian history, the Canaries, where Swedish-Norwegian director Tess Quatri herself partly grew up. This first feature by the alumna of both the Norwegian Film School and Alma Education has recently tempted Norway’s illustrious Eye Eye Pictures production company to get on board, fresh from its Cannes success as a co-producer of Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning Fjord.
Eye Eye Pictures is additionally prominent during the Industry Days’ talks and panels programme: producers Andrea Berentsen Ottmar and Dyveke Bjørkly Graver will join forces with Romanian producer Tudor Rei for a visit behind the scenes of the making of Fjord and will separately dwell on their Oscar journey in the capacity of co-producers of Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value.
Yet another behind-the-scenes look will examine the upcoming second season of the top-rated Swedish lawyer series Burden of Evidence, ably guided by writer Jens Lapidus and producer Caroline Landerberg. Writers Amy Deasismont, Cilla Jackert and Alex Haridi, each with acclaimed experience under their belts, will assemble around the Writers’ Roundtable; Netflix and the Fryshuset youth organisation will present contenders for The Next Generation of Film Makers; and documentary director and photographer Pep Bonet will lead the Nikon workshop. Representatives from Mubi, TV4 Play and SVT will participate in the annual Meet the Streamers talks. Finally, participating in a hot debate, which kicked off in 2020 and spans a total of ten years, influential players within the local film industry will attempt to steer us into Visions of Swedish Cinema 2030, a most noble mission.
